Licking Memorial Health Systems Promotes Youth Wellness

Licking Memorial Health SystemsLicking Memorial Health Systems (LMHS) dedicates numerous resources to promoting youth wellness in the community.  Hosting a variety of programs throughout the year, LMHS is laying the groundwork for the next generation to enjoy healthier, longer lives.  The upcoming Health & Fitness Fest is just one of many LMHS programs designed to improve the health and well-being of the community’s residents at an early age.

Health & Fitness Fest
The sixth annual LMHS Health & Fitness Fest, scheduled for Saturday, April 9, invites youth ages 6 through 12 to participate in numerous healthy and fun activities over the course of the afternoon.  This free event, offered in cooperation with the Licking County Family YMCA and Denison University, will be held from 12:00 Noon to 3:00 p.m. at the YMCA, 470 West Church Street in Newark.

Led by Denison students, youth will visit various activity stations located throughout the YMCA.  At each station, participants will collect achievement decals on their “Fit·Tix” event cards upon completion of a health-related activity.  A prize raffle will be held based on how many stations each child visited.  Activity stations will include: an inflatable bounce house (ages 8 and under) and obstacle course (ages 8 and up), speed pitch, Zumba, yoga, gymnastics, track sprints, free throw shooting and more.  Youth will learn about nutrition as well as receive information about the Licking Memorial Dental Clinic and YMCA memberships.

Several health screenings will be offered including Body Mass Index testing, blood pressure and functional movement.  Youth also will have the opportunity to test their flexibility at a reflex station.  A DJ will keep the pace moving with music and healthy snacks will be provided in the mezzanine.  Face painting, balloon animals and a healthy eating game will be coordinated by Denison students.  The prize drawing, held at 2:30 p.m., will reward youth with YMCA pool passes, a scooter with helmet, gift cards, basketballs, baseballs, fitness meters, jump ropes, water bottles, Frisbees and more.  Last year’s event hosted more than 250 youth and their families.  For more information, please contact Licking Memorial Public Relations at (740) 348-1572.

Active • Fit
The Active•Fit Youth Wellness Program is another resource available to community youth by the Health Systems.  Promoting health and fitness, the Active•Fit program recently began its fourth year, featuring updated guidelines designed to improve youth involvement while supporting local schools.  The Active•Fit Program has registered more than 1,350 participants, who select health-related goals and track their progress on the Active•Fit website in order to earn prizes and support their school’s physical education program.

Launched in 2012 in partnership with Newark Advocate Media, the Active•Fit Program has promoted healthy lifestyles for youth ages 6 through 12 throughout Licking County.  The goals of the program are as follows:
• Introduce the benefits of exercise, healthy eating, and proper rest
• Motivate youth to create personal goals for fitness
• Help youth develop a lifelong commitment to personal fitness

The annual Active•Fit Program features three four-month periods.  During each of the three periods, Active•Fit participants are encouraged to complete four “Active” category goals and four “Fit” category goals in order to be eligible for a prize drawing.  Participants who complete at least eight goals are automatically entered into the prize drawing for each period.

This year, the Active•Fit Program was updated to align more directly with Ohio Physical Education Guideline Goals, in order to assist physical education instructors and their students throughout the community in achieving those goals.  In addition, each participating school has the opportunity to earn generous rewards from LMHS to supplement their gym equipment needs.  These rewards are based on student participation within each school.  To assist the schools with reward funding, students must register for the program and accomplish their goals during Periods 1 and 2.

The Active•Fit Youth Wellness Program hosts a year-round calendar of events.  For more information or to register for the Active•Fit Youth Wellness Program, please visit www.ActiveFit.org.
