Active•Fit Program Promotes Healthy Lifestyles for Local Youth

Licking Memorial Health Systems (LMHS) dedicates numerous resources to promote youth wellness in the community.

Active•Fit Program Promotes Healthy Lifestyles for Local Youth
LMHS President & CEO Rob Montagnese prepares for a play with his flag football team during the Active•Fit Field Day.

Hosting a variety of programs throughout the year, LMHS is laying the groundwork for the next generation to enjoy healthier, longer lives.  The Active•Fit Youth Wellness Program is one of these valuable resources available to community youth, featuring guidelines designed to improve youth involvement while supporting local schools.  Now in its fifth year, Active•Fit has registered more than 3,000 participants, who select health-related goals and track their progress on the website in order to earn prizes and support their school’s physical education program.

Launched in partnership with Newark Advocate Media, the Active•Fit Program promotes healthy lifestyles for youth, ages 6 through 12, throughout Licking County.  The goals of the program are as follows:
• Introduce the benefits of exercise, healthy eating and proper rest
• Motivate youth to create personal goals for fitness
• Help youth develop a lifelong commitment to personal fitness

The annual Active•Fit Program features three four-month periods. During each of the three periods, Active•Fit participants are encouraged to complete four “Active” category goals and four “Fit” category goals in order to be eligible for a prize drawing.  Participants who complete at least eight goals are automatically entered into the prize drawing for each period.

In 2016, the Active•Fit Program was aligned more directly with Ohio Physical Education Guideline Goals to assist physical education instructors and their students throughout the community in achieving those goals.  In addition, each participating school has the opportunity to earn generous rewards from LMHS to supplement their gym equipment needs.  These rewards are based on student participation within each school. To assist the schools with reward funding, students must register for the program and accomplish their goals during Periods 1 and 2.  For more information or to register for the Active•Fit Youth Wellness Program, please visit www.ActiveFit.org.
